This position is FT 39hrs/week, 3-13 hr shifts 6a-7:30p

The Department of Neurosurgery, in collaboration with Patient Care Services, provides comprehensive, compassionate, and technologically advanced patient and family centered neurosurgical care, including the most advanced diagnostics and treatments, education of future leaders in the field, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical research to develop new therapies.

Under the supervision and direction of the Neurosurgeon-in-chief and Chair the Advanced Practice Provider will support inpatient responsibilities for the Neurosurgery service. The Advanced Practice Provider is expected to take a collaborative approach to team-based care, working closely with clinical faculty, residents, and the interdisciplinary team to provide high-quality patient care, medical, and surgical services to patients across the life span.

The Advanced Practice Provider will support the comprehensive management of brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerve diseases and must demonstrate flexibility in adapting to census and acuity needs while maintaining the highest standards of consistent, high-quality patient care. Responsibilities of the inpatient Neurosurgery APP include (but are not limited to):

Order Writing
Orders for all situations covered by protocols are written and signed by the APP within the scope of the role.
Orders for situations not covered by protocols are first discussed with an appropriate physician involved in the patient's care and written by the APP and including the physician's name.

Preoperative Patient Care (Inpatient)
Obtain a detailed and accurate history, perform an appropriate physical examination, record and present pertinent data in a manner meaningful to the physician.
Perform and prescribe routine laboratory and related studies, medications, and consultations standard for the Neurosurgical Service. Admission and preoperative orders will be entered into Order Entry and signed by the APP. The admission orders will include routine laboratory tests, consultations and continuing medications, which the patient had been taking prior to admission.

Postoperative Patient Care

In coordination and collaboration with neurosurgical residents, the APP will provide clinical management of neurosurgical patients across the lifespan. Under advisement of a resident or an attending physician, they will prescribe/order prn medications, treatments, routine labs, and consults.
Perform suture removals and wound checks on as needed basis.
Will perform and maintain qualifications to perform minor procedures:
- discontinue ventriculostomies or ICP bolts
- discontinue drains or lines

Neurosurgical Care

Assist in implementation of the treatment plan as formulated by the attending neurosurgeon. Contribute to the assessment of the patient, respond appropriately to the clinical situation with good clinical judgment, and, with the attending and resident staff, develop and implement the clinical care plan, within the scope of the practice.
Participate in daily rounding on the inpatient neurosurgical units through multidisciplinary collaboration.
Assist in facilitating patient movement through the system, particularly as it relates to the admission and discharge process.
Responsible for communication and coordination with residents, fellows, nurses, and other physicians involved with the care of hospitalized patients.
Perform minor bedside procedures or assisting physician with procedures, including shunt reservoir aspiration and shunt programming.
Independent performance of evaluative and treatment procedures essential to provide an appropriate response to life threatening emergency situations per the Neurosurgical Service guidelines.

Education

Provide education to the patient regarding the illness, surgical procedure, and care.
Provide education to staff (e.g., other nursing staff and caregivers) regarding the surgical procedure and post-operative care, according to the standards of good clinical practice, the requests of the attending surgeon, and the needs of the individual patient.

Other responsibilities:

Participate in meetings, committees, and other initiatives to support the program, process improvement and implementation of clinical and administrative efforts.
Complete documentation as required, ensuring completeness, accuracy and confidentiality.
Perform other responsibilities, programmatic participation and other
assignments as needed.

Prior experience in Neuroscience, preferred
APP licensure across the life span, preferred

-Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures
